Hokies Football: Holland Fisher's Most Important Spring of His Career

In 2013, the Virginia Tech Hokies put together a recruiting class that is going to be looked back at as a very strong class. This class was led by Kendall Fuller who is certain to be a first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft if he doesn't get injured or stays for his senior season. However, that class also included 2014 Freshman All-American and Third-Team All-ACC tight end Bucky Hodges, 2013 Freshman All-American and Third-Team All-ACC cornerback Brandon Facyson, left guard Wyatt Teller, linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka, and free safety Chuck Clark. With Facyson healthy, all six of the aforementioned players will start against Ohio State most likely barring injury or suspension while Jonathan McLaughlin may be a starter if he is healthy and his footwork improves. Kalvin Cline may also play a lot against Ohio State while Deon Newsom will likely be a return man and multiple other players could end up having a big role in that game. When this class was first put together, there were two players that stood out in this class as stars for the future. Those two were Kendall Fuller and Holland Fisher. Fuller has already become a star that is seen as the best cornerback in college football by myself and others like Bleacher Report. Fisher was ranked as a top 100 player, top 7 player in Virginia, and top 10 safety by all three of the major recruiting sites (247 Sports, Rivals, ESPN). Fisher also played in the 2013 Under Armour All-American Game, and showed that he had the potential to be a superstar for the Hokies. However, Fisher has not had the same road to this spring as Fuller as Fisher has not played a single down of football for the Hokies. Fisher spent the fall of 2013 at Fork Union before transferring in during the spring and redshirting this past fall. Now, Kyshoen Jarrett has graduated and a multi-player battle to win the starting rover job is about to begin this spring making this the most important spring of Holland Fisher's football career. With Chuck Clark set to be the starting free safety next season, there will be plenty of competition for the rover job including Holland Fisher, Desmond Frye, C.J. Reavis, Anthony Shegog, and Der'Woun Greene. Fisher entered college as a player that seemed made to be a rover for Bud Foster's defense as a safety that was built like an outside linebacker. Fisher was known as a very good run defender coming out of high school while also being solid in pass coverage. More than anything, Fisher has the largest upside of any of these players at the rover positions. Fisher has the potential to be one of the best safeties that the Hokies have ever had, and this spring will be very important to see if he can actually reach the potential that many believe he has. Fisher should be the man to win the rover job this spring, if he actually reaches his full potential. There are plenty of top recruits who end up being busts, and a bad spring for Fisher could have him on the path to joining that group. There is no doubt that this is the most important spring of Holland Fisher's football career.
