Hokies Recruiting: Virginia Tech is in the Top 5 for 4* DB Marlon Character

The Virginia Tech Hokies have gotten off to a solid start on the recruiting trail with seven commits, but the coach that has been doing a tremendous job on the recruiting trail so far is Torrian Gray. Four of the Hokies' commits are defensive backs headlined by 4-star athlete Reggie Floyd who is slated to be a safety but could end up at running back However, Floyd could end up at running back, especially since the Hokies are in the top 5 for Marlon Character. Character is a four-star safety from Grady High School in Atlanta, Georgia that has received offers from over a dozen power-conference teams. This week, Character released his top 5 which included the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, South Carolina Gamecocks, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Ohio State Buckeyes. Character is a highly ranked safety that seems likely to receive a four-star rating from ESPN when they do their mass update along with his current four-star ratings from 247 Sports and Rivals. Character is ranked as the ninth best safety by the 247 Sports Composite and the 13th best safety by Rivals. Rivals also has Character as the 18th best player in the state of Georgia while the 247 Sports Composite has him as the 20th best player in Georgia. Marlon Character is definitely a top prospect and the Georgia Bulldogs have the proximity to home advantage to make them the favorites. Georgia also could give Character a chance to compete early while defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has had a lot of success previously at Florida State and is still rebuilding the Georgia defense. South Carolina has had plenty of quality safeties over the years and are also right in the hunt to get Character. Alabama and Ohio State have been two of the top four programs over the past few seasons, while they also have two of the best head coaches in the country in Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. The Hokies may be the biggest surprise on this list, but the prestige of Virginia Tech's defensive backs has to help. Having arguably the best defensive coordinator and best DBs coach in the country in Bud Foster and Torrian Gray also makes a big impact on the recruiting trail. Virginia Tech is definitely not the favorite, especially with SEC schools like Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama leading the hunt. However, the Hokies are in the hunt for Marlon Character and might just be able to beat the SEC schools and Ohio State for a top defensive back prospect in SEC territory.
