Hokies Football: "Voice of the Hokies" Bill Roth Leaves for UCLA

When you think of 1987 in the history of Virginia Tech, the most notable thing is most likely the fact that the Hokies hired Frank Beamer to be the head football coach. However, Beamer was not the only person that arrived in Blacksburg that would become a prominent, public figure for the Hokies. 1987 was also the year that Bill Roth arrived to become the "Voice of the Hokies". Over the last 27 years, Roth has called plenty of football and men's basketball games for the Hokies but more than anything, Roth has become a voice that fans love hearing on Thursdays and Saturdays in the fall along with making a great impact on the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities. After 27 years; Bill Roth and Virginia Tech made an announcement today that was definitely a surprise. https://twitter.com/hokiesports/status/590893292897902592 Bill Roth will be leaving Virginia Tech to take the same position for the UCLA Bruins as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for UCLA football and men's basketball. Roth has had an illustrious career, and the Bruins are not only getting a great play-by-play broadcaster but also a great person, and someone who can be a leader and a great public figure for UCLA. Roth has also been known for hosting other programs whether it would be Virginia Tech Sports Today on Sunday mornings, Tech Talk Live! on Monday night, or other special features including Virginia Tech's live National Signing Day show. Roth has been a great part of the Virginia Tech community for the last 27 years and will be someone that is missed by many in the Hokie community. However, there is no doubt that Roth will always be a celebrated Hokie who has left a tremendous legacy in Blacksburg.
