Virginia Tech Golf: Trevor Cone Wins the Individual ACC Championship With Two Others

The Virginia Tech Hokies' men's golf program has had a lot of success over the past few seasons mainly because of two golfers, Scott Vincent and Trevor Cone. Last week, Vincent had his moment to shine as he made the cut at the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This weekend, it was Cone's turn to shine and he took advantage. The senior shined at the ACC Championship as he finished in a three-way tie for first place with Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech and Robin Sciot-Siegrist of Louisville. Cone entered the day with a two-stroke lead and shot a 1-under 71, but Albertson and Sciot-Siegrist both had strong final rounds and were able to catch Cone. There was supposed to be a playoff, but travel restrictions prevented this playoff from happening after the playoff in which Georgia Tech defeated Clemson. Cone became the first Virginia Tech golfer to win the individual ACC Championship since the Hokies have been in the ACC. Trevor Cone has had a lot of victories in his collegiate career, but this is undoubtedly the most prestigious in his four-year career. Cone will now enter the postseason with a lot of momentum and is a guy that has to be considered as a sleeper to win the individual NCAA title should the Hokies make it in the team championships or if Cone gets in another way. After this victory, Cone seems extremely likely to be an All-ACC golfer for the 2014-2015 season while he has definitely improved his chances of once again being on one of the All-American teams. Cone will definitely look to take advantage of this momentum with the Hokies headed to a NCAA regional to try to make the national championships as a team. This definitely is a great victory for Trevor Cone, but the next task will be doing well at the NCAA regional and getting the Hokies to the national championships.
