Hokies Football: C.J. Reavis Has An Impressive Spring to Earn Starting Rover Spot

Spring Football wrapped up this past weekend for the Virginia Tech Hokies with the offense and defense both having solid springs. There were plenty of players that had strong springs including Michael Brewer who has built a large lead over Brenden Motley for the starting quarterback job though Dwayne Lawson will look to make it interesting once he arrives this summer. One of the biggest questions facing the Hokies was which players would take over at the safety positions for Detrick Bonner and Kyshoen Jarrett. The free safety spot still seems somewhat wide open, but one player has locked down the starting rover spot for the 2015 season. C.J. Reavis entered the spring as a player that was thought to be a future starting free safety. When Donovan Riley was moved to rover for the spring, it was thought that Riley would be the guy that would earn the starting rover job ahead of some of the less-experienced defensive backs. Instead, Reavis shined this spring and seems almost certain to start at rover against Ohio State. Reavis shined in the Spring Game and an impressive punt block in which punter Mitchell Ludwig actually tucked the ball in because of how close Reavis was to prevent a fumble and potential touchdown. C.J. Reavis plays with a high level of intensity and aggression which is exactly what Bud Foster is looking for in his rovers. Reavis pushes the edge of playing reckless, but has found that edge, and has seemed to find consistency in being on the right side of that to maximize his performance as a rover. Some say that Reavis is the hardest hitter on the team, and whether he actually is or isn't, he definitely knows how to put a big hit on an opposing running back or receiver. Reavis also can close down quickly on an opposing runner to prevent them from being able to make any sort of quick move. Reavis has made some strides in pass coverage this spring with Torrian Gray doing a great job of developing the sophomore safety. Reavis still has a lot of improvement to make as a rover, but Reavis has become a solid pass covering rover that should only continue to get better over the summer and through fall practice. What is really exciting about Reavis is the fact that he has a great athlete who has a lot of potential and has the work ethic to become an extremely good player. Reavis seems to have a chip on his shoulder as a former three-star recruit that he is using to push himself to not only become a starter but also a playmaker on the Hokies' defense. C.J. Reavis has a very bright future as a hard-hitting rover that now is in position to be a starter for the Hokies for the next three season unless injuries get in the way. Reavis not only has the potential to be a star but also has the work ethic on and off the field to make sure he achieves that goal.
