2015 NFL Draft: VT OT Laurence Gibson Goes to the Dallas Cowboys in the Seventh Round

The Virginia Tech Hokies had to wait to the third day of the 2015 NFL Draft to see one of their departing seniors to be selected in the draft, but Kyshoen Jarrett became the first Hokie selected when the Washington Redskins took him in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. That selection extended the Hokies' streak of having at least one player selected in every draft to 22 years. However, the Hokies weren't done just yet having players selected with one more player coming off the board. Offensive tackle Laurence Gibson made a big rise after he shined at the 2015 NFL Combine. Throughout the process leading up to the draft, Gibson showed off his athleticism, which impressed much of a league and had most draft analysts projecting him as a late-round pick. Those analysts would be proven right as Gibson was selected in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys. This pick means that Gibson will not be competing for playing time as a rookie due to the Cowboys' impressive offensive line that is in place. However, this move does give Gibson a chance to develop behind arguably the NFL's best offensive line which can only be a good thing. With the large upside that Gibson brings, it makes sense that the Cowboys would look to add some depth with Gibson as they could even groom him to be their starting right tackle in the future depending on how he develops. For Gibson, it will now be up to him to work hard and listen to the coaching that he gets because he has the athletic talent to have a long career in the NFL. There is definitely a good chance that the Cowboys will try to put Gibson on the practice squad though the athletic offensive tackle will look to be on the roster to start the season. Laurence Gibson is definitely worthy of this opportunity with the Cowboys and the situation couldn't probably be better with the talent that is on that roster. Now, the question remains whether Gibson could end up being a seventh round steal or if he'll be another player that was worth the risk at this point in the draft, but never had much success in his pro career. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if Gibson at least has a career for a few years as a backup offensive linemen. Congrats to Laurence Gibson on being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.
