Hokies Recruiting: Four-Star WR Tino Ellis Commits to Maryland Over Virginia Tech

Throughout the last year, the Virginia Tech Hokies and Maryland Terrapins have been battling each other to get the commitment from four-star wide receiver Tino Ellis of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. The four-star recruit has been a top 2016 target for both programs throughout the recruitment of this class. Even when Ellis released a top six, everyone still knew that this was a two-horse race between the Hokies and Terps no matter how strong of a push programs like West Virginia and Rutgers made. This evening, Ellis made his announcement on the Mid-Atlantic CSN, and one program was very happy about what they heard. Four-star wide receiver Tino Ellis committed to the Maryland Terrapins over the Virginia Tech Hokies on CSN Mid-Atlantic. At one point, the Hokies were the stated leaders for the four-star wide receiver, but the Terps have continued their in-state momentum from gaining the commitment of QB Dwayne Haskins this past May. For now, this is a disappointing loss for the Hokies in Maryland following DT Ellison Jordan earlier this summer when he committed to Penn State over a group that included the Hokies in Maryland. However, Ellis has said in the past that he plans on taking some official visits, and the Hokies would likely be a recipient of an official visit. This recruitment has also been so tight that one small change could cause Ellis to change his mind and commit to the Hokies. The good news for Hokie fans is that Virginia Tech already has three wide receiver commits from Eric Kumah, Samuel Denmark, and Divine Deablo. The fact that the Hokies already had three wide receivers committed may have helped the Terrapins pass Virginia Tech and get the commitment from Ellis. However, the Hokies are still looking to add more wide receivers with four-star WR Dredrick Snelson, and three-star athletes Grant Holloway and Phillip Patterson. Patterson and Holloway both could end up on defense also, and they could get a commitment very soon with Patterson set to announce his collegiate decision tomorrow. Missing out on Tino Ellis is a disappointment for the Hokies, but the good news is that Virginia Tech still has three quality wide receiver commits in Eric Kumah, Samuel Denmark, and Divine Deablo. Plus, Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips won't be going anywhere till at least after the 2016 season.
