Hokies Recruiting: Three-Star WR Phillip Patterson Commits to Virginia Tech

Last weekend was very positive for the Hokies with the Beamer BBQ proving to be very productive for Virginia Tech on the recruiting trail. Last Saturday, the Hokies gained two commitments from two three-star recruits, OT Patrick Kearns and LB Tavante Beckett. Then, the Hokies gained another commitment in Monday from four-star WR Divine Deablo who is ranked 172nd in the ESPN 300. However, the Hokies have had a couple of disappointments this week which started Thursday when three-star OLB/DE Brock Miller committed to N.C. State over Virginia Tech. Yesterday, four-star WR Tino Ellis committed to Maryland over the Hokies in what was an even bigger disappointment though the Hokies definitely will try to flip his commitment. Things can change quickly on the recruiting trail, and the Hokies have received some good news today. Three-star wide receiver Phillip Patterson of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies this afternoon. Patterson has received 15 offers so far, and chose the Hokies over finalists Duke, Penn State, North Carolina, Old Dominion, and Wake Forest. Patterson is seen as one of the top 20 recruits in Virginia with ESPN ranking him as the Commonwealth's 17th best recruit while Rivals and the 247 Sports Composite rank him as the 18th best Commonwealth recruit. Patterson is also ranked as the 38th best athlete by ESPN, 86th best wide receiver by Rivals, and 94th best wide receiver by the 247 Sports Composite. Patterson is another solid addition from the 757 that seemed like a possibility to end up on either side of the football depending on where he committed due to his good size and athleticism along with his experience playing WR and safety. After his commitment, Patterson told local media that the Hokies plan on using him at wide receiver when he arrives in Blacksburg. This now gives the Hokies four wide receiver commits in Patterson, Deablo, Eric Kumah, and Samuel Denmark. All four of these guys have seemed to be quality under-the-radar receivers. Zohn Burden has been doing a great job getting the wide receiver that the Hokies were looking to add in this class. Bryan Stinespring was initially the primary recruiter for Patterson and has done a good job recruiting the three-star wide receiver. Patterson also visited the Hokies last weekend, and that seemed to be where the Hokies were able to close the deal and get his commitment. Phillip Patterson seems likely to be a solid commit throughout the process that is a very good, athletic addition to a Virginia Tech recruiting class that has grown a lot in the last two weeks.
