Hokies Football: Michael Brewer Breaks Left Collarbone, Out 4-8 Weeks

The Virginia Tech Hokies put up a great effort against Ohio State, but the Buckeyes proved why they are #1 and potentially the best college football team since at least Miami back in 2000. However, the Hokies suffered a bigger loss to a key player on their team that was the reason for the disappointment of many in Hokie Nation. Quarterback Michael Brewer suffered a broken left collarbone against Ohio State, and had a successful surgery yesterday. Trainer Mike Goforth has told media that Brewer will be out anywhere from 4-8 weeks though post-surgery reports suggest that there is a chance Brewer will be back in about four weeks, which could mean a return against N.C. State. Brewer took a significant number of hits in this game, and the break may have started after he suffered a hit on a long completion to Isaiah Ford late in the second quarter. On the play he was injured on, Brewer landed on his left collarbone after taking a hard hit from Ohio State DT Adolphus Washington. It is significant that the injury to Brewer is in his non-throwing shoulder, which may give him a better chance of returning sooner for the Hokies. The shortest recovery period would likely be multiple more weeks if Brewer's injury was to his right collarbone instead of his left collarbone. In the mean time, the Hokies are set to go with Brenden Motley though they will let Chris Durkin and Dwayne Lawson also compete for the job. However, this is Motley's offense right now with the Hokies having some packages for Lawson that likely will be tested out against Furman. Motley is definitely not as good as Brewer who seemed set for a big season after a very good game against Ohio State before his injury. Motley will be the starting quarterback for a couple weeks, but you have to wonder how long can Motley keep the job. Lawson is going to be a really good quarterback, but he still needs time to get a better grasp of the system. However, Lawson might be a better option in the very near future compared to Motley. The Hokies will have to adapt with Michael Brewer out for the next few weeks. The good news is that the Hokies have some weapons in the passing game for whoever the quarterback is, but that is the big question. Virginia Tech should still be favorites in their next four games, and hopefully, Brewer will be back in time for the Friday Night game against N.C. State.
