Hokies Football: Game Predictions for Furman at Virginia Tech

After a short week, gameday has once again arrived in Blacksburg with an opponent that is nowhere near as talented as Ohio State in FCS team Furman. The Hokies will be looking for their first win of the season after the loss on Monday night, and should be able to get it. With Michael Brewer out, Christiansburg, Virginia native Brenden Motley will make his first career start for the Hokies though Dwayne Lawson and Chris Durkin are likely to play. Now, let's get to the predictions for today's game against the Paladins.

The Hokies kick off against the Furman University Paladins this afternoon at 3:30 and will ultimately look to pick up their first win of the 2015 season. Just five days ago, Beamer and Co. got off to a shaky start at home and the Buckeyes bested the Hokies 42-24. This week, the team will search for consistency on both sides of the ball as the Hokie faithful yearn for the first win of the year.
We all know the story on offense. Michael Brewer is out at least four weeks and new starting QB Brendan Motley will need to come in grab the attention of the crowd early and often. There is really no telling what Motley can do at the position, since he was thrusted in to a difficult situation on Monday night once Brewer went down.
Scot Loeffler has said all week that he doesn't know who the QB2 is going to be for the game. I believe true freshman Dwayne Lawson's redshirt will be burned as he makes his college football debut. The entire playbook is not available for Lawson but he will have a certain package of plays that Loeffler can choose from to fit Lawson's skill set.
The run game will get going as all four top running backs will be available with Shai Mckenzie coming off his one game suspension. As long as the quaterbacks are able to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers and the offensive line including soon to be starter Yosh Nijman gets good push, the Tech offense should be able to roll through for a good amount of points.
Monday night was certainly not the best showing of the Lunch Pail defense. There are questions about Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson's health. If the entire defensive backfield is ready for this game, I expect four interceptions from the unit. Andrew Motuapuaka will recover from his frustrating start and will record double digit tackles on the day.
After a sub par performance from one of the best defensive lines in the country, Dadi Nicolas and the boys in the trenches will be able to play to each of their own techniques and amass a good number of sacks on the afternoon. Hoping all goes well, Tech will be able to get some of the younger defensive players in the game to rack up a little collegiate experience.
Beamerball will come alive tomorrow with two non-offensive scores and at the end of the day, Frank will be heading home happy along with the thousands of fans in attendance. With a lot to cheer about and a glance at the QB of the future, the Hokies will gain their first win tomorrow. Hokies on top 45-13.

The goal for the Hokies today should be to make sure that this game is over by halftime to give younger players plenty of time to play. Brenden Motley has been prepared as the starter this week, and will likely look to prove that he can be a suitable replacement for Michael Brewer while the senior quarterback is injured. Virginia Tech's defensive line did not have a single sack last week, but will be looking to prove a statement. The Hokies will come out firing and I expect that Virginia Tech will have at least five sacks with a couple coming from senior defensive end Dadi Nicolas. Torrian Gray has likely been firing up his defensive backs this week, and I expect a few turnovers forced. Mook Reynolds seems likely to get a lot of playing time today, and will be ready for a solid debut. Offensively, Dwayne Lawson will play some today and the freshman quarterback will want to show off his skills. Against a weak Furman defense, Lawson and Motley will both have very good games. This game will not be close at all as the Hokies will win 41-10.
