Hokies Football: Travon McMillian Gives the Hokies a Unique Offensive Weapon

The Virginia Tech Hokies got an easy win in a blowout against the Furman Paladins 42-3. In this game, the Hokies showed the group of offensive skill position players that they plan on using with their first-team offense throughout the rest of the season. One of those players is Travon McMillian who is already proving to be a very versatile, offensive weapon that has received high praise from Scot Loeffler. https://twitter.com/normwood/status/642839983125078016 McMillian made the transition from quarterback to running back during fall practice, and was redshirted because of this. Now, McMillian has been developed into a unique offensive weapon that Loeffler can line up in a few different places on the field. McMillian has great acceleration with very good top-end speed and tons of agility to make some quick cuts to get around many defensive players. The Hokies have already shown an ability to use McMillian out of different spots whether it be in a traditional backfield role or in the slot with McMillian not always being put in motion to be used in a jet sweep. McMillian has also shown that he has some serious big-play potential due to his explosiveness, acceleration, top-end speed, and agility. McMillian had the longest run since at least 2013 for the Hokies against Furman when he went for 63 yards on his way to having 6 carries for 98 rushing yards. McMillian has shown that he can be a solid pass catcher out of the slot that has the potential to be a more serious threat as he plays more in the slot. McMillian has helped the Hokies significantly in the slot with the massive void that Virginia Tech has at wide receiver after Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips. McMillian has four catches in two games and seems likely to have at least 20 to 30 catches this season due in part to the Hokies' lack of options at wide receiver beyond Ford and Phillips. McMillian should only get more confident in the slot, and has a lot of potential in that role as he gets more playing time in that spot. McMillian also is showing the potential to possibly be the Hokies' top running back at some point while at least keeping one of the top three spots on the depth chart. In the long run, McMillian is ahead of both Shai McKenzie and Marshawn Williams, and has gone from the third guy behind them to the best of the trio that arrived on campus last fall. Travon McMillian has a bright future as an offensive weapon that has the versatility to be used in multiple roles. McMillian is going to be an x-factor going forward for the Hokies' offense that could be a big boost for the Hokies in some close ACC games.
