Hokies Football: Virginia Tech at Boston College Preview and Prediction

The Virginia Tech Hokies face a must-win game today against the Boston College Eagles with both teams at 3-5, and both knowing that they need a win to realistically keep their chances of making a bowl game alive. The Hokies have been one of the biggest disappointments in college football this season after most picked Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech to win the ACC Coastal. The Coastal title is out of reach, but the Hokies still can make this season not as big of a disappointment if they can once again beat Virginia and also extend their bowl streak to 23 straight seasons. To do the second one of those two goals, Virginia Tech needs to win today with Georgia Tech in 12 days and ACC Coastal co-leader North Carolina coming to Blacksburg the following week. This very well may be the last game before we officially know that we are in the last season of the Frank Beamer era. Of course, there is still a small possibility that Beamer is back, but it is almost certain that no matter what happens, this will be Beamer's final season. The Hokies have ran the ball well with Travon McMillian the past few weeks, but face the best rushing defense statistically in college football with the Eagles. Virginia Tech will need the offensive line to step up in this game, and create some space for McMillian. If they can do that, the Hokies will dominate this game even if the final score-line isn't that big. Boston College's offense is one of the worst in college football, but the Eagles nearly beat Louisville last week because of turnovers. This week, the Hokies need to protect the football and avoid giving up turnovers. Boston College will have Troy Flutie as their starting quarterback this week, but Boston College's passing attack has been awful no matter who has been at the QB spot. The Eagles' rushing attack is a little better, and the Hokies need to force Boston College to beat them through the air and not on the ground. If the Hokies shut down the Eagles on the ground, Boston College doesn't have much of a chance of winning this game. If the Hokies can play as well as they did against N.C. State a couple weeks ago, this could be a pretty easy win for the Hokies. The question is will Virginia Tech come out with the necessary level of energy because if not, Boston College can definitely pull off the home upset. Yes, it has been a tough, disappointing season for the Hokies with it seeming likely that Frank Beamer's retirement may be announced next week. However, the Hokies will step up and get a big win to improve their chances of extending their bowl streak to 23 seasons in what will be a very low-scoring game.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 13, Boston College 7
