Hokies Basketball: Seth Allen is Poised to Lead the Hokies On the Court This Season

Year two of the Buzz Williams era has almost arrived with the opening tipoff of Virginia Tech's 2015-2016 season coming this Saturday against Alabama State. Virginia Tech's roster has seen tremendous change in Williams's tenure with only one player remaining from the last team of the James Johnson era (Devin Wilson). This year, the Hokies will have six new, on-scholarship players on the floor playing including former Maryland guard Seth Allen. Allen, along with Zach LeDay, got to be around the program last year while redshirting due to NCAA transfer rules, but most of the attention was on Allen, the former Maryland star. Now, Seth Allen has his chance, and seems poised to take over as a leader on a Virginia Tech team that will be pushing to make a return to some sort of postseason play this season. Last season, Allen got to watch his replacement at Maryland, Melo Trimble, dominate opponents and leads the Terps to a resurgence in their first season in the Big 10. Allen may have a chip on his shoulder entering this season to prove himself after the season Trimble had at Maryland as a freshman. In his one season at Maryland, Allen was solid averaging 13.4 points, 3.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 29.7 minutes per game while also shooting 38% from beyond the arc. Allen also stepped up in some of Maryland's biggest games including a 22-point performance in a 57-55 loss to a Syracuse team that was ranked fourth in the country. This past year, Seth Allen has had time to refine his time, and build up strong chemistry with his teammates, knowing that his time was coming. There has been talk of Allen playing shooting guard, and that does seem likely to happen, but Allen seemed quite comfortable at the point as a court general for the Hokies in the backcourt. Allen seemed to bring a veteran presence and an intense mentality to the scrimmage that only will wear off on his teammates in every game over the course of this season. Allen knows what it takes to play at a high level in the nation's toughest basketball conference, the ACC. Allen is ready to prove once again that he is one of the best point guards in the conference, and help make the Hokies more relevant in the conference along with pushing the Hokies towards a postseason birth of some sort. After sitting out last season, Seth Allen's time has arrived in Blacksburg, and the Virginia native is poised to be a valuable leader for the Hokies whether he is at the point or on the wing.
