Hokies Women’s Basketball: Virginia Tech Upsets #8 Tennessee 57-43

While just about all of Hokie Nation was focused on where Frank Beamer’s final game would be, the Virginia Tech Hokies’ women’s basketball team was on the road in Knoxville facing the #8 Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Most were not expecting an upset especially with the Hokies going on the road to face the Lady Volunteers.

However, Virginia Tech did what most did not expect yesterday.

The Virginia Tech Hokies pulled off one of their biggest victories in program history with a 57-43 win over the #8 Lady Volunteers on the road in Knoxville. Virginia Tech’s victory moved the Hokies to 7-1 on the season and may lead to the Hokies jumping into the top 25 this week.

The Hokies were led by guard Vanessa Panousis who had 21 points and 3 assists in 35 minutes while making 5 of 8 three-point shots. Panousis went to the foul line a few times and stepped up for the Hokies as she made all six of her free throw attempts in this game.

Panousis’s 21 points was the most points in a single game by a Hokie this season, and came at the right time for Virginia Tech against the talented Lady Volunteers. For her performance against Tennessee and earlier in the week against Penn State, Panousis was named ESPNW’s National Player of the Week.

Regan Magarity also had a very good game for the Hokies with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals while making all three of her shots from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Chanette Hicks also provided plenty of production with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals against the Lady Volunteers.

The Hokies have had a strong week with a win at Penn State in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge followed by the big upset victory over the Lady Volunteers. Right now, Virginia Tech seems like a team that could end up playing in the NCAA Tournament this year if they can continue to play at this level.

Dennis Wolff has the program headed in the right direction already this season and a NIT or NCAA Tournament appearance seems very possible for Virginia Tech.
