Hokies Football: Four-Star JUCO QB Jerod Evans Commits to Virginia Tech

Today, Justin Fuente and the Hokies hosted multiple commits and top recruiting targets for the first official visit weekend of Fuente's tenure in Blacksburg. Many around the Virginia Tech program had been touting this weekend as a big opening weekend with the quality of talent taking official visits to Blacksburg. Some had questioned how good of a recruiter Fuente can be, but today is a statement that should alleviate those recruiting concerns. Four-star recruit Jerod Evans, the number 1 JUCO quarterback in the nation out of Trinity Valley Community College and originally from Mansfield, Texas; committed to Virginia Tech today. Evans had multiple offers from other major programs across the nation including Missouri and California while Auburn had also showed interest in Evans previously. Evans is ranked as the number 1 junior college quarterback by both of 247 Sports' rankings with their Composite rankings having Evans eighth among JUCO recruits, and their traditional rankings having him fourth. After watching some of his highlights, you can see immediately why Evans is such a highly-touted recruit that will come in, and compete for the starting job immediately. Evans can make all the necessary throws, and has the arm to get the ball in there quickly when he needs to. Evans is definitely a dual-threat quarterback that has good speed, solid strength, and the elusiveness to make some guys miss. Evans has plenty of different juke and spin moves in his arsenal to create space around defenders looking to contain him. Evans also is an effective passer whether he is in the pocket or he is forced outside of the pocket. In his highlight tape, Evans makes one 45-yard throw to a wide open receiver who catches it while still moving in what is an almost perfect throw with great strength and velocity. Evans has the arm strength to get the quick passes in there quickly as soon as his receiver beat while he can also make some deeper throws from within the pocket. Evans is a very talented quarterback that looks ready to make an immediate-impact at the FBS power-5 conference level. With the commitment of Jerod Evans, Virginia Tech will likely have a quarterback battle between Evans, Dwayne Lawson, Brenden Motley, and Joshua Jackson. However, Jackson seems unlikely as the freshman with a redshirt seeming more likely for him at this point while Motley has an uphill battle going against two players with more arm strength than Motley. This quarterback battle will kick off in full this spring with Evans and Jackson arriving early to compete with Lawson and Motley for the starting job. Having Evans arriving in the spring makes him the favorite to get the starting job with Lawson while Motley's starting hopes are likely hurt by today's addition. For Justin Fuente, this is an impressive recruiting pickup, and a statement that the Hokies will not be content to just recruit regionally. Fuente has already been praised nationally for getting Evans today including by ESPN's Gerry Hamilton. https://twitter.com/HamiltonESPN/status/675776154192736257 Fuente has been making moves on the recruiting trail so far in getting the recommitment of Phillip Patterson out of the 757, and then getting the #1 JUCO QB in Jerod Evans out of Texas to come to Blacksburg. Jerrod Evans is an impressive recruiting pickup for the Hokies, and seems likely to be the guy that will be under center for the Hokies next fall. For now, the Hokies have a serious quarterback battle coming with Evans, Dwayne Lawson, Brenden Motley, and Joshua Jackson.
