Hokies Football: Virginia Tech is in the Top 3 for Three-Star OG Dylan Powell

Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech Hokies had to cancel their big recruiting visit weekend yesterday due to the major snowstorm affecting Blacksburg, but the Hokies have received some better news on the recruiting trail today. https://twitter.com/Ben_WGEM/status/690374625784664064 Virginia Tech, Iowa State, and Stanford are in the top three for three-star OG Dylan Powell of Hannibal Senior High School in Hannibal, Missouri. Powell was scheduled to take an official visit to Blacksburg this weekend, but has postponed that to next weekend when he was previously schedule to visit Georgia Tech. Powell is ranked as the 39th best guard by Rivals, 67th best guard by ESPN, and 87th best guard by the 247 Sports Composite. Among recruits from Missouri, Powell is ranked 11th by Rivals, 12th by ESPN, and 18th by the 247 Sports Composite. Powell has received multiple offers over the last few weeks whether it be from programs with new head coaches or major programs with much more recent success that decided to offer. On January 14th, Powell made the decision to decommit from Purdue with the Boilermakers now completely out of the hunt for the Missouri native. Iowa State and Virginia Tech both have new head coaches with success in Group of 5 conferences, but Stanford has the pedigree with David Shaw at the helm after the Cardinals had another great season ending with a Rose Bowl win. Iowa State has the proximity to home advantage, but Virginia Tech and Stanford definitely have some national recognition. For the Hokies, a big factor is the fact that Powell seems to be a top guy for OL coach Vance Vice. Vice has been quite aggressive for some time with Memphis offering Powell a scholarship back in October. The relationship between Vice and Powell will be critical, and may be a big reason why the Hokies are set to receive a visit on the final weekend before National Signing Day. Iowa State has also received an official visit from Powell that seems to have gone well, but Stanford is a big sleeper that could surprise despite the Cardinals offering Powell within the final two weeks. However, the fact that Powell will visit Virginia Tech over Stanford next weekend has to be a positive for the Virginia Tech coaching staff. The Hokies have a good chance to gain some more talent on the interior offensive line with Vance Vice making a strong push to get Dylan Powell. However, Virginia Tech has a battle on their hands with Iowa State making some moves in recruiting under Matt Campbell, and Stanford looking to poach a young offensive guard out of the Midwest. 1/24 2pm Update: TechSideline.com reported via Twitter that Dylan Powell will be visiting Virginia Tech during the middle of the week and Stanford on the weekend. https://twitter.com/TechSideline/status/691329415599513600 Powell is the only mid-week official visitor that we know of at this point which could be beneficial to set up more one-on-time between Powell, his family, and the coaches. Meanwhile, the Cardinals may be favorites in some ways given their pedigree in producing NFL offensive linemen recently including Pittsburgh Steelers OG David DeCastro.
