Hokies Football: Virginia Tech is a Frontrunner for Four-Star DE Yetur Matos

After a not ideal finish to Class of 2016 recruiting, the Virginia Tech Hokies gained a big commitment this past Saturday with the addition of four-star DE Tyjuan Garbutt from Fredericksburg, Virginia. However, Garbutt isn't the only highly-ranked defensive end from the Fredericksburg area that the Hokies may get. https://twitter.com/tcoghilljr/status/697488132187361280 Four-star DE Yetur Matos of Chancellor High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia has Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Penn State in his early frontrunners according to his father. In addition to his early frontrunners, Matos has a total of 18 offers from a group of schools that also includes Clemson, Pittsburgh, California, Kentucky, Duke, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Vanderbilt plus more. Matos is one of the top Virginia juniors as he is ranked 7th in the Commonwealth by the 247 Sports Composite and ninth by Rivals. Nationally, Matos is ranked as the 235th best junior by Rivals and the 187th best by the 247 Sports Composite. In talking with Taft Coghill Jr. of Fredericksburg.com, Yetur Matos's father Rob did mention that the Hokies, "have some ground to make up on Penn State and North Carolina." This is likely due in part to the fact that the Hokies changed head coaches while Penn State and North Carolina have had the same head coach recruiting Matos for the last year or so. Matos likely will visit Virginia Tech again this spring along with North Carolina while he already has a visit scheduled for February 27th. Clemson definitely could also make a push for Matos while Virginia will also try to get the four-star defensive end on campus. A big reason why the Hokies aren't starting from scratch with Matos is Bud Foster as Foster is the area recruiter for Fredericksburg and immediately gave Matos a returning connection to the new staff. The retention of Charley Wiles also helps especially since we know he will at least be working with the defensive ends no matter how Virginia Tech replaces Torrian Gray. While it has been said that Matos will make his decision on his own, the fact that friend and fellow Fredericksburg four-star DE Tyjuan Garbutt also committed to Virginia Tech likely will have some influence on Matos. Right now, the Hokies have a little work to do with Yetur Matos, but Justin Fuente and his staff already have themselves in position to be contenders to take both top defensive ends from the Fredericksburg area.
