Hokies Basketball: Zach LeDay Receives All-ACC Honorable Mention Honors

The Virginia Tech Hokies had low expectations to start the 2015-2016 season with the media predicting the Hokies to finish 14th out of the 15 ACC teams. The Hokies were headlined by Seth Allen entering the season while Zach LeDay flew under the radar as an intriguing player, but not someone that was expected to do much more than provide some solid depth or be a decent starter. Instead, LeDay played with a chip on his shoulder all season and became the star of a team that exceeded expectations by more than anyone could have imagined. LeDay's breakout season deservingly earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors as the star of a Virginia Tech team that earned the 6 seed in the ACC Tournament and went 18-13 overall including a 10-8 conference record. For the regular season, LeDay averaged 15.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 0.8 steals in 30.6 minutes per game including shooting 46.7% from the field, 37.3% from beyond the arc, and 77.3% from the free-throw line. Zach LeDay was one of the biggest surprises in all of college basketball after LeDay averaged only 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15 minutes per game in the 2013-2014 season at South Florida. Buzz Williams talked early in the season about how LeDay was one of those guys that seems to thrive with him as a tough, hard-working, under-the-radar guy that is willing to be coached in every aspect of his game. LeDay wasn't a great defender, but he improved on the defensive end throughout the season, and became a solid shot blocker by the end of the season while also being a tough player that was willing to attack the rim to either get a layup or draw a foul. LeDay could also be relied on most of the time to make big free throws when the Hokies needed him to along with getting some big points in the post or making the open three. LeDay was one of the leaders of this team throughout the season, and brought the toughness and effort that Hokie fans have always loved seeing in the great teams of the Frank Beamer era over at Lane Stadium. There definitely could be an argument made that Zach LeDay should have been named to the All-ACC Third Team, but there is no doubt that LeDay is putting together a great legacy in Blacksburg even if his Virginia Tech career will only span two seasons.
