Hokies Women's Basketball: Virginia Tech Will Host Elon in the WNIT

On Sunday night, the Virginia Tech Hokies' men's basketball team received a bid and a home game in the NIT with many Hokie fans happy but athletic director Whit Babcock and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team knew that they might also get a postseason birth. Last night, the hopes of the women's basketball team came true. The Hokies received an invitation to the 64-team WNIT and will host 18-12 Elon on Thursday night at 7pm, one day after the men's team host Princeton in the 32-team NIT. Virginia Tech's WNIT appearance will mark their first appearance in any sort of postseason since 2007 in what was a 5-11 ACC season for the Hokies, but an impressive 12-2 non-conference record made a big difference. Virginia Tech picked up some impressive non-conference wins including victories at Tennessee and Penn State that nearly put the Hokies in the top 25 briefly right before the start of ACC play. However, many were disappointed with how the Hokies went 5-11 in ACC play before losing their only ACC Tournament game to Boston College. The Hokies seem to have the potential to have a bright future and the WNIT will be a great opportunity for Virginia Tech to finish the season strong and build momentum towards next season. The Hokies also have a lot of youth on their roster, and this postseason experience will be valuable with Virginia Tech having aspirations of getting to the NCAA Women's Tournament in the future. Dennis Wolff will also want to finish the season strong knowing that more progress will be expected next season and that a setback could cost him his job. Wolff seems to have the Virginia Tech women's basketball program headed in the right direction, but will need to keep it up with a fairly young roster that has high-upside players in the frontcourt ready to replace the three graduating forwards. The Virginia Tech women's basketball program is also headed in the right direction, and definitely has the chance to make a deep run in the WNIT, but it all starts with Elon.
