Hokies Football: Three-Star QB Hendon Hooker Commits to Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies have been quiet on the recruiting trail for the past month with no commits since early February and only two overall in four-star DE Tyjuan Garbutt and three-star DB Devante Smith. However, that changed today in what was an impressive recruiting job by head coach Justin Fuente. High three-star QB Hendon Hooker of Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina committed to Virginia Tech today over fellow finalists Notre Dame, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Missouri, and North Carolina A&T. Hooker has received double-digit offers so far with a list that includes the 6 previously-mentioned teams plus multiple other schools including South Carolina, West Virginia, Indiana, Virginia, and Syracuse. Hooker is ranked as the 19th best dual-threat quarterback by Rivals, 11th best dual-threat quarterback by the 247 Sports Composite, and eighth best dual-threat QB by 247 Sports' traditional rankings. Hooker is also ranked as the 17th best recruit in North Carolina by Rivals, ninth best by the 247 Sports Composite, and tenth best by 247 Sports' traditional rankings. Hooker now joins the future quarterback chain for the Hokies behind the current ascendency of Jerod Evans, Dwayne Lawson, and Joshua Jackson. Hooker is a great athlete with tons of upside as a tall, mobile quarterback that can make plays with his legs or make some deep throws though Hooker still is raw as a passer. Hooker has been the top quarterback target for Justin Fuente and the Hokies who made their big move when Hooker visited the Hokies on the way back from Notre Dame recently. Despite not offering till March 1st, Fuente made Hooker a priority and put the hard sale to get the Greensboro native to Blacksburg. That visit changed Hooker's recruitment and allowed the Hokies to basically out-of-nowhere leapfrog Notre Dame to take the lead before 2017 QB Avery Davis committed to Notre Dame. Fuente showed off his recruiting chops in sealing the deal to Hooker and now has a 2017 quarterback in his recruiting class to help recruit other top recruits whether it be Drake Deiuliis from North Carolina or 757 playmakers like Khalan Laborn and Tahj Capehart. Fuente and Brad Cornelsen have been quite effective in their recruitment of Hooker this month to go from starting the month with offering him to getting him to commit 24 days later. Justin Fuente is beginning to putting together some strong, foundational pieces for their Class of 2017 with Hendon Hooker being another impressive pickup for the new staff.
