The Virginia Tech Hokies started Thursday afternoon off by gaining a big commitment in high three-star QB Hendon Hooker from Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina; joining four-star DE Tyjuan Garbutt and three-star DB Devante Smith as the Hokies' three commits at the time. However, the Hokies were not done just yet with another commit coming later that night.
Three-star linebacker Aundre Kearney of Mandarin Christian School in Jacksonville, Florida committed to the Hokies last night after visiting Virginia Tech last Saturday. Kearney was committed to Miami previously until February and has a double-digit offer list that also includes offers from North Carolina, Rutgers, Illinois, Wake Forest, and Cincinnati.
Kearney is rated as a three-star recruit by ESPN, Rivals, and 247 Sports with the 247 Sports Composite ranking him as the 54th best OLB and 112th best Florida recruit while 247 Sports' rankings has him as the 27th best OLB and 51st best Florida recruit.
The Hokies quickly moved into the picture after Kearney decomitted from Miami in February leading to the visit this past Saturday to Blacksburg after making a stop at Wake Forest. Kearney's recruiter Charley Wiles made a strong push to get him along with Bud Foster and clearly that push worked with the Hokies getting two commits in one days from guys that Wiles had some involvement in the recruitment of.
Wiles has received some criticism from fans for his recruiting abilities, but the veteran DL coach has always seemed to do a solid job in Florida on the trail and Kearney is the latest Floridian. Kearney has the potential to be a very valuable commit on the recruiting trail for the Hokies with Justin Fuente and his staff having their eyes on multiple other Florida targets including four-star athlete Bruce Judson.
Kearney is an intriguing prospect that will need to add some weight onto his 210-pound frame though he definitely has time to do that with a full year of high school football left. Kearney also plans on being an early enrollee for the Hokies, which would give him a chance to potentially get some early playing time at linebacker though the Hokies do not have a senior projected to start at their linebacker spots at this point.
Virginia Tech now has a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail thanks to a great Thursday with commitments from QB Hendon Hooker and LB Aundre Kearney.
