Hokies Football: Three-Star LB Rayshard Ashby Commits to Virginia Tech

After the Virginia Tech Hokies were quiet on the recruiting trail for about a month, Justin Fuente and his staff had a lot of reason to celebrate on Thursday with the commit of high three-star QB Hendon Hooker and three-star LB Aundre Kearney, joining four-star DE Tyjuan Garbutt and three-star DB Devante Smith.

Virginia Tech is now hosting multiple top recruits this weekend and have gained another commit today.

Three-star LB Rayshard Ashby of L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Virginia committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies today while on his visit in Blacksburg. Ashby currently has five offers from the Hokies, West Virginia, Maryland, East Carolina, and James Madison; and became the second linebacker commit for Virginia Tech, joining Aundre Kearney.

Ashby is another solid Virginia commitment addition with Rivals ranking him as the 28th best in the state, the 247 Sports Composite ranking him 29th in the state, and 247 Sports having him 26th among Commonwealth recruits. 247 Sports also ranks Ashby as the 42nd best ILB while the 247 Sports Composite ranks him as the 47th best ILB.

Ashby is undersized for a linebacker at 5’11” and around 215 pounds, but the Hokies have had plenty of talented, tough linebackers that were undersized and Ashby looks like he could be another one of those. Ashby is known as a tough, physical linebacker with good football instincts especially as a quality player on rush defense in the box.

Zohn Burden is the primary recruiter for Ashby and has done a good job resisting efforts from West Virginia and Maryland who were both fairly high on the linebacker from Richmond. Burden has proven to be a great recruiter for the Hokies over the past 14 months, and will look to take advantage of this recruiting momentum with a Richmond recruit with top 757 recruits.

Rayshard Ashby is another strong addition to a Virginia Tech recruiting class that has a lot of momentum thanks to three commitments in three days.
