Hokies Basketball: UNC Asheville Transfer Dylan Smith Recaps His Virginia Tech Visit, Updates His Transfer Process

The Virginia Tech Hokies gained a 2017 commitment this past week from highly-regarded four-star guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker who has the versatility and skills to play on the win or even run the point. However, Buzz Williams and the Hokies are still looking to fill the two current open spots on the roster from the transfers of Satchel Pierce and Jalen Hudson. This past weekend, the Hokies had one of their top targets on campus. UNC Asheville transfer SG Dylan Smith used his first visit since deciding to transfer to make a weekend stop in Blacksburg on Saturday and Sunday. The Alabama native averaged 13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.0 steals in 27.3 minutes per game while shooting 36.9% from the field, 34.9% from beyond the arc, and 82.2% from the free-throw line as a freshman. Smith said he enjoyed his visit to Blacksburg and was impressed by Buzz Williams and his program's structure and accountability along with how close the team is. Smith also said that the Hokies have set the bar high and while he didn't say the Hokies were leaders, it seems like the Hokies are now a frontrunner in the pursuit of Smith. Smith told us before publicly tweeting out that nine schools are in pursuit of him: Virginia Tech, Arizona, Clemson, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, TCU, Butler, and Murray State. Smith also told us and ESPN that he will visit Arizona on Tuesday and that he also plans on taking at least three visits before making his decision in the next two to three weeks. More schools could also get involved in this recruiting battle though Virginia Tech and Arizona both should be in it to the end. Smith would give the Hokies a young, talented wing player that has a lot of potential after leading UNC Asheville in scoring on their way to the NCAA Tournament. Smith also shot at least 50% from beyond the arc in three big games against Texas A&M and Georgetown in the regular season, and against eventual national champion Villanova in the postseason. At this point, Dylan Smith isn't that close to a decision, but the Hokies had a strong visit this past weekend and should be in the hunt as a frontrunner for the rest of the way. The question that remains is can the Hokies seal the deal after Smith finishes all of his visits?
