Hokies Basketball: Virginia Tech Assistant Isaac Chew Takes Assistant Job at Texas A&M

Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech Hokies have been busy recently in pursuit of recruits and transfers to fill the now three open scholarship slots that the program has due to the decisions to transfer by Satchel Pierce and Jalen Hudson along with Devin Wilson now playing both football and basketball. Now, the Hokies will need to find a new assistant. https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/status/730967669801926656 https://twitter.com/RTD_MikeBarber/status/731105341707030528 Top assistant Isaac Chew is leaving the Hokies to take an assistant job with Texas A&M under Billy Kennedy. Kennedy and Chew have worked together previously from 2007 to 2011 when Kennedy was the head coach at Murray State. The duo helped build the Racers into a strong program that went 54-14 in their final two seasons at Murray State before Kennedy left for Texas A&M and Chew went to Missouri. With the Aggies being at a higher profile nationally right now, Chew's move makes sense as this should help him get more noticed as he tries to get a head coaching job. Chew will most likely be the top assistant under Kennedy as someone that is a talented coach and a very good recruiter. For the Hokies, losing Chew is disappointing but Buzz Williams has been quite effective himself on the recruiting trail, and the Hokies have a strong group of assistants. What will be interesting to see is whether Williams promotes an assistant to be the top assistant like Chew and then a young, up-and-coming assistant or if Williams reaches outside of the program to bring in a new top assistant. The timetable for a hiring is unknown at this point as it is unknown how long Williams has known that Chew was considering leaving for Texas A&M. However, Chew has interviewed for other jobs, including some head coaching opportunities, after the past two seasons, and Williams may already have a list of guys that he will target. Isaac Chew did a great job as the top assistant for Buzz Williams, but expect Williams to bring in another quality assistant to replace Chew.
