Hokies Basketball: 2016 PG Tyrie Jackson Commits to Virginia Tech

Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech Hokies have been busy trying to fill scholarship spots with JUCO transfer Seth LeDay taking one spot but not being eligible to play for the Hokies till the 2017-2018 season. However, Williams and his staff are still actively looking to add two more players. Today, they got one of them. 2016 point guard Tyrie Jackson of Tift County High School in Tifton, Georgia became the second Hokies' high school commit of the Class of 2016. Jackson has been seen as a late bloomer and one of the best players left in the 2016 class on the East Coast. The Hokies weren't the only programs to gain late interest in Jackson as Auburn, N.C. State, and Wichita State all reportedly showed late interest. Jackson's commitment comes after the Georgia point guard visited the Hokies earlier today. With some uncertainty about whether Devin Wilson will still play basketball after this upcoming football, adding some more depth at point guard behind Seth Allen and Justin Robinson was necessary and the Hokies have done just that. It is very likely that Jackson is on scholarship, leaving the Hokies one scholarship that will likely be used on a big man. There is definitely a possibility that the Hokies could add another guard and focus on adding multiple big men in their Class of 2017 especially if the Hokies are unable to add another big man in the next 10 days. Buzz Williams and the Hokies did a good job of closing the deal and securing some point guard depth especially with the uncertainty regarding whether Markell Johnson will reclassify to 2016 or not. The Hokies have filled another scholarship and added some much needed point guard depth with Tyrie Jackson. Now, the Hokies will look to fill their final open roster spot as they target a return to the NCAA Tournament next season.
