Hokies Football: Carson Lydon Will Transfer Away From Virginia Tech

Looking ahead to fall practice, many wondered if sophomore linebacker Carson Lydon might have a chance at being able to push mike linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka for his starting job with some fans that were frustrated with Motuapuaka's play last season. However, Hokie fans received some surprising news regarding the future of Lydon. https://twitter.com/thekeyplay/status/746090241933586432 Carson Lydon has left the Virginia Tech football team and will transfer out of the program. The Florida native played some as the third mike linebacker behind Andrew Motuapuaka and walk-on Sean Huelskamp. With Lydon leaving the program, Motuapuaka will likely not have to worry about a surprise challenge for the starting job though Huelskamp's experience gives him a chance at possibly making it interesting. The loss of Lydon takes away depth at the mike linebacker spot with Lydon being seen as the replacement for Motuapuaka at mike linebacker by 2018. However, the Hokies now have some depth issues with Huelskamp being the only backup mike linebacker with some experience but not necessarily having the upside that Lydon had. Virginia Tech will be adding Eron Carter in a couple weeks and while Carter does project as a mike linebacker, he will need some time to develop and is very likely to be redshirted in the fall. Losing Lydon hurts the depth chart at mike linebacker for the Hokies but does open up another scholarship spot that could be used to add another linebacker in the Class of 2017. The Hokies have their fair share of linebacker that they have some good momentum with and having that additional scholarship could end up being useful in that regard. The loss of Carson Lydon is undoubtedly unexpected and surprising, and it now will be up to Bud Foster to build up depth behind Andrew Motuapuaka and Sean Huelskamp in case injuries once again pop up at the mike linebacker spot.
