Hokies Football: Adonis Alexander, Houshun Gaines Sentenced To Year-Long Probation, Community Service

Since their arrest almost immediately after the Virginia Tech Spring Game, DB Adonis Alexander and DE Houshun Gaines along with many Virginia Tech fans have been wondering what would happen to Gaines and Alexander with Virginia Tech giving them an indefinite suspension as more information was gathered. Today, the courts made their decision on the punishment for Alexander and Gaines which was tweeted out by multiple beat writers including Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times. https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/748157498507542529 https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/748157763595939840 https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/748158020719362049 https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/748158236210139136 https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/748160346716782593 Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines are on year-long probation by both Virginia Tech and the court along with both having to do 24 hours of community service plus sign up for a community corrections program that involves random drug-testing. The sentence is probably what most expected given the crime and now should give Virginia Tech more information on making a decision on how long a suspension may be. At this point, Alexander and Gaines are still suspended indefinitely but it seems likely that Whit Babcock, Justin Fuente, and Virginia Tech will change that to some sort of single or multi-game suspension sometime within the next two weeks now that the courts have ruled. Hokie fans can also expect that this change likely will happen before the start of fall practice. What does seem likely at this point is that both Alexander and Gaines will be suspended for the season opener against Liberty. The question that Fuente, Babcock, and others around Virginia Tech football will have to decide is whether one game is enough along with having to ignore the performance reasons that could make the decision more difficult. However, a one-game suspension seems like a fairly appropriate course of action given that to my knowledge, this is a first-time offense and that Ohio State gave out one-game suspensions to multiple players including Joey Bosa last season for reasons related to marijuana. However, the seriousness of this compared to some of the Ohio State suspensions may lend to a lengthier, multi-game suspension. At this point, it is up to Virginia Tech to make the decision but also to Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines to avoid legal troubles off the field and putting themselves into a position where their future as Virginia Tech football players could be in jeopardy.
