Hokies Basketball: Buzz Williams Gets Contract Extension Through 2022-2023 Season

This past March and April, rumors were swirling that Buzz Williams may be nearing a departure from Blacksburg with multiple programs showing interest including Oklahoma State and TCU. However, Williams didn’t seem to really show much reciprocal interest and will be back in the fall for the third seasons.

Williams has done an impressive job in his first two seasons in Blacksburg and received a well-deserved extension today.

Buzz Williams received a two-year contract extension that will pay him $3.3 million for the 2021-2022 season and $3.5 million for the 2022-2023 season. There are also only slight changes to the previous years of Williams’s contract with only a couple of minor raises to his buyouts with his buyout of $1.5 million after this season being the only buyout in his contract over $1 million.

However, the biggest thing about this move is the symbolism of commitment between Williams and the Hokies. While it would be crazy to think at this point that Williams will be in Blacksburg as long as Frank Beamer was, Williams seems to be ready to stick around in Virginia Tech for the next few years especially with top Texas schools that may be able to lure him back home not having a coach on the hot seat.

There is no doubt that the best part of this deal is the fact that Williams and his family will endow two scholarships to Virginia Tech, one sponsored by Buzz’s Bunch that will be given to a Virginia Tech student with disabilities and one sponsored by his family that will be given to a female student-athlete that is preferably a first-generation college student.

Williams’s tremendous character has shown time and time again as he has invested in the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities as he did while at Marquette. There are a few big reasons why just about any program would love to have Williams in charge of their basketball programs and his character is a big part of it.

This is a good day for Virginia Tech with Buzz Williams not only receiving a well-deserved contract extension but also endowing two scholarships to Virginia Tech.
