Hokies Football: Adonis Alexander, Houshun Gaines Suspended for Opener Against Liberty

Recently, Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines received their sentences for their marijuana possession which also started the waiting game in seeing what Justin Fuente and Virginia Tech would do in regards with a suspension. Of course, the duo were on an indefinite suspension at the time but with the legal system part complete, the clock started to tick for Virginia Tech to make a decision. Today, they announced the punishments for Alexander and Gaines. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/753307117885370368 Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines were both reinstated from their indefinite suspensions today and then suspended for the season opener against Liberty though the door is still open for that suspension to be extended if necessary. Most were expecting this to be a one-game suspension given the crime they committed. The timing of this is unsurprising with the Hokies getting this out of the way weeks before they start fall practice ahead of their opener against Liberty. These suspensions will also allow the Hokies to give some other depth players some playing time which should only help if the Hokies deal with big injuries in 2016 as they did in 2015 with Kendall Fuller and Michael Brewer. This also does impact the Battle at Bristol with both players likely to have a role as Adonis Alexander seems poised to start at either cornerback or rover with Terrell Edmunds at the opposite while Houshun Gaines seems poised to be a backup defensive end after a strong spring. This announcement ends the lingering questions about what may happen to Adonis Alexnder and Houshun Gaines, and should allow them to get back focused on athletics and academics.
