Hokies Football: Jerod Evans Named Starting QB Against Liberty

Throughout fall camp, the Hokies have had a very private quarterback battle with Josh Jackson closing the gap to join Jerod Evans and Brenden Motley in the Hokies' starting QB battle. Many were starting to think that the Hokies would possibly not announce a starting QB until late next week or game day. However, the Hokies have made a decision. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/768933562427052033 Justin Fuente announced this evening that Jerod Evans has been named the Hokies' starting quarterback for their season opener against Liberty. Evans was ranked as the top JUCO QB this past recruiting class by 247 Sports and was seen as arguably VT's top commit in the Class of 2016. The decision is not a surprise as most expected Evans to be the guy from the time that Justin Fuente brought Evans on campus and gained a commitment from the Texan JUCO prospect. Evans has been the favorite to get the job done even when word out of practice was that Josh Jackson was the best passer among the trio of quarterbacks. While Evans talked about how the QB battle still seems ongoing, I would expect that Evans will be the Hokies' starting quarterback for the season unless he gets hurt or struggles significantly. Evans also will likely receive most of the first-team reps going forward with the possibility that Josh Jackson or Brenden Motley could also receive a few first-team reps just to keep them sharp in case of an Evans injury. Many anointed Jerod Evans as the next starter as soon as the four-star junior college quarterback committed to the Hokies in December but it was not that easy for the Texas native. However, Evans kept fighting and has earned himself the starting quarterback job in the first game of the Justin Fuente era against Liberty.
