Yes, we are now one game away from the first game of the Justin Fuente era as the Virginia Tech Hokies kick off their 2016 season tomorrow against the Liberty Flames. While this is far from being the biggest opener in Virginia Tech football's history, this game definitely should be a great tune-up for next week's game of the week against the Tennessee Volunteers in Bristol.
With that said, our writer Henry Skutt gives us his three players to watch this Saturday.
Jerod Evans
Evans will be making the start in Fuente's first game at the helm of the Virginia Tech program. There was an intense quarterback battle over the summer, and Evans has won (for now) the starting job over redshirt-senior Brenden Motley and true freshman Josh Jackson. I say "for now" because Coach Fuente has been vocal that the quarterback decision is not final. For this game, watch for Evans to come out and show why he should be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season -- especially the Tennessee game.Bucky Hodges
There is a reason why Hodges is being touted as a player to watch this season. His versatility, size, and ability all factor into him being a very good player this year. He is listed as a wide receiver on the depth chart, but Coach Fuente has said that he will be getting snaps at tight end as well. Liberty is lacking size and experience in the secondary -- expect Fuente to exploit that.Greg Stroman
Last year, Stroman played on offense, defense, and special teams. While he was a contributor to the offensive scheme, the coaching staff thinks that he will be more productive focusing on just the defensive side of the ball. He'll be one of the starting cornerbacks come Saturday afternoon. It'll important to look for how he performs in a tune-up for the Battle at Bristol. Also keep an eye out for him on special teams. He was quoted saying that every time he touches the ball he "expects to take it to the house." Keep an eye out for his explosiveness on Saturday.
