Hokies Football: Jerod Evans, Tremaine Edmunds Are the Hokies of the Game Against East Carolina

The Virginia Tech Hokies made another statement this past Saturday as the Hokies beat East Carolina 54-17 which included a 38-0 Hokies lead at halftime. Virginia Tech was dominant throughout the game against a solid ECU team that had beat the Hokies in two-straight games before yesterday's blowout Hokies' victory. There were plenty of stars from yesterday's performance but two Hokies stood out from the crowd.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: QB Jerod Evans

After not winning the job till two weeks before the season, Jerod Evans has exceeded all expectations and he once again shined against East Carolina on Saturday. Evans had another great performance as he went 13-for-20 for 282 passing yards and 3 touchdowns while also leading the Hokies in rushing with 10 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown including a spectacular 55-yard touchdown run that made the SportsCenter top 10 at #2. Evans has been fantastic over the past two weeks and overall on the season as he is the only power 5 quarterback with 11+ touchdowns (13) and no more than interception (1). Evans has been making a lot of good decisions and while he still has some room to improve with his deep throw accuracy, Evans is proving to be one of the best quarterbacks in an ACC loaded with quality QBs. Isaiah Ford also received some consideration after his strong performance with 4 catches for 117 receiving yards and a touchdown that could have been even bigger if Evans had a couple more accurate throws. Ford once again looked like an All-American that would have had a bigger day if it wasn't for the fact that the Hokies sparingly played him in the third quarter and not at all in the fourth.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: LB Tremaine Edmunds

This choice was a much closer call but after a strong game last week, Tremaine Edmunds earned this week's honors with an even better game against East Carolina. The sophomore linebacker had the best game of his young collegiate career to date with 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Edmunds was dominant throughout the afternoon making great plays in run defense while also being very effective on multiple blitzes including when he and Ken Ekanem got the safety in the second half. Edmunds has the potential to be a star at the linebacker spot and is beginning to really tap into his potential. Ken Ekanem also gained some consideration after another strong performance with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 QB hurries while being a nuisance all day for ECU's offensive line. Tim Settle also gained some consideration as the big man did some damage on defense and special teams on his way to 2 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss with fellow backup DT Ricky Walker playing well also as he had 3 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1 pass breakup. Congrats to Jerod Evans and Tremaine Edmunds on being our Hokies of the game against East Carolina.
