Hokies Football: Jerod Evans, Woody Baron Are Our Hokies of the Game Against Duke

Not every win will be pretty and that was the case for the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday as they beat the Duke Blue Devils 24-21 to stay in control of their own destiny in the race for the ACC Coastal crown. The Hokies found ways to win with plenty of players stepping up in big moments to make things happen. However, two players stood out from the rest to earn this week's Hokies of the Game honors.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Jerod Evans

Jerod Evans didn't have his best game of the season but he was able to make some big plays when the Hokies needed him to and help Virginia Tech escape Durham with a victory. Evans was actually more effective as a runner with 18 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown while also going 15-for-27 through the air for 192 passing yards and 0 interceptions. Evans did choose to run or take a sack too quickly in some situations but the junior quarterback once again made a big impact in helping the Hokies escape Duke with a victory. Looking down the road, Evans continues to be one of the ACC's top quarterbacks and seems likely to at least be an All-ACC Honorable Mention this season. Travon McMillian also had a big bounce-back game as the redshirt sophomore had 15 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown plus 2 catches for 33 yards. Isaiah Ford is now four catches away from breaking Jarrett Boykin's VT career reception record after the junior wideout had 4 catches for 62 yards on Saturday.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Woody Baron

Woody Baron had another big game on Saturday as the senior defensive tackle made some big plays to prevent Duke from having more success from their traditional running game and help the Hokies get a victory. The senior defensive tackle had 9 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks in what can only be described as another tremendous performance from Baron who may have a chance to be on the All-ACC First Team after this season. Not too long ago, Baron was seen as undersized for a DT with some wondering if a move to DE would make sense or if he even had a future in Blacksburg. However, Baron has kept working at DT adding some weight and rewarding the scouting of Charley Wiles with a stellar senior season after a solid junior campaign. Terrell Edmunds led the Hokies with 14 tackles as the Hokies' starting rover continues to be quite effective in that role after being at cornerback last season while his brother Tremaine Edmunds also played well with 10 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 QB hurry. Meanwhile, Greg Stroman made a big play with his blocked field goal while also having another solid day in coverage before suffering an ankle sprain. Congrats to Jerod Evans and Woody Baron on being this week's Hokies of the Game. Stay up with The Tech Lunch Pail for the latest on the Hokies via Twitter, Facebook, and our email newsletters.
