Hokies Football: Virginia Tech Jumps to 14th in the College Football Playoff Rankings

The Virginia Tech Hokies continued their College Football Playoff rankings appearances tonight, moving up five spots to #14. The Hokies debuted in the playoff rankings for the first time last week at #19. After a slightly off performance at Duke, this jump is a little surprising given how the playoff committee has been affected by subpar performances in the past. https://twitter.com/CFBPlayoff/status/796142261889277952

The ACC again has 5 teams in the rankings, including two Top-10 teams with Louisville at #6 and Clemson at #2. If the playoffs were to be played this week, Clemson would still be facing off against #3 Michigan on December 31st. The Hokies continue to be above both UNC and FSU -- proving that the committee values head-to-head very highly. Virginia Tech beat North Carolina, and the Tar Heels beat the Seminoles. This ranking for the Hokies is again different than what we have seen from the most recent AP and Coaches Poll. The Hokies actually dropped in the Coaches Poll when it was released on Sunday, and UNC was much higher than the Hokies in the most recent AP poll. Virginia Tech obviously needs to keep winning if they want to keep moving up in the rankings. If they want to make the playoffs, there is a lot that needs to happen, but it is technically still in the picture. Their next opportunity for a win is against Georgia Tech at home on Saturday at 3:30. If they blow out the Jackets -- as Vegas is predicting -- there is a chance that the Hokies roll into South Bend as a top-10 team. Who would've guessed that in the first year under Coach Fuente?
