Cam Phillips and Terrell Edmunds are the Hokies of the Game Against Clemson

The Virginia Tech Hokies put together a valiant effort in the ACC Championship and came quite close in a game in which they were down by as much as 21 in, but the Hokies came up short, losing 42-35 to Clemson who will face Ohio State in one of the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. The Hokies put up a valiant effort with plenty of quality performances, but two players stood out to earn our Hokies of the Game honors this week.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Cam Phillips

This was not an easy choice, but we went with Cam Phillips who had one of his best games of his career on the biggest stage and took advantage of the mismatches he had in the slot throughout this game on his way to having 12 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown off of a double move that gave him plenty of space for Jerod Evans to drop a really good pass in for the touchdown that put the Hokies within 7 inside the final 6 minutes of the game. Phillips took advantage of the mismatches he received in the slot throughout the evening while also making a couple guys miss again with his ankle-breaking moves that have made plenty of defenders look bad. Phillips has been one of the Hokies' most improved players while moving him to the slot has made him a lot more dangerous and even if Isaiah Ford and Bucky Hodges both leave, Phillips should stay in the slot. Jerod Evans had some ups-and-downs but had a strong game overall as he went 21-for-35 for 264 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions while also rushing for 46 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries. Isaiah Ford made some big things happen as he had 4 catches for 89 yards that broke Virginia Tech's career receiving yards record while Travon McMillian had 37 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 7 carries.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Terrell Edmunds

There were a few strong defensive performances, but Terrell Edmunds made his fair share of defensive plays plus made the great catch on the fake punt to earn this week's Defensive Hokie of the Game honors. Edmunds had a strong performance leading the Hokies with 12 tackles in addition to having 1 tackle for loss, 1 QB hurry, and the 20-yard reception off the fake punt that gave the Hokies a much-needed spark leading to their first touchdown. Edmunds has flown under-the-radar, but his move to rover has worked out quite well for the Hokies as someone that can hold his own in man coverage but also is quite effective at making plays around the line of scrimmage. Edmunds is going to be a leader on this defense next year and a key piece on what could be a very good Virginia Tech defense even with four senior starters leaving. Tim Settle continues to show tons of potential and led the Hokies with 1.5 tackles for loss on Saturday while Andrew Motuapuaka had a big interception off of a Vinny Mihota tipped pass and also had 4 tackles and 1 QB hurry. Vinny Mihota made a couple big plays on the defensive line with 2 pass breakups and 2 tackles while fighting through a shoulder injury to continue break up passes.
