Virginia Tech Women's Basketball Rises to 23rd In AP Poll, Chanette Hicks is ACC Player of the Week

Kenny Brooks has gotten off to an impressive 11-0 start in his first year at the helm of the Virginia Tech Hokies women's basketball program with the Hokies latest win coming on the road over an Auburn team that has consistently been receiving top 25 votes this season. After Sunday's big win on the road, the Hokies seemed likely to take a fairly big jump in the polls. Instead, there jump turned out to be pretty small. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/810912785794301952 Virginia Tech rose one spot from 24th to 23rd in the AP poll after their win over Auburn though that may be due partly to the fact that many voters may not have adjusted their ballots after the results of yesterday's game or may have already submitted them. However, the fact that the Hokies didn't take a bigger jump despite being unbeaten and getting a road win over a team that is still receiving a few top 25 votes doesn't make that much sense. For Virginia Tech, there isn't a big game in which they can probably boost their spot in the rankings that much till their ACC opener on Monday, January 2nd against North Carolina at Cassell Coliseum. The Tar Heels aren't ranked currently, but they are a solid program and would be a great way to start ACC play and bring some more positive if they were able to get a win and get to 14-0 at that point. Meanwhile, that wasn't the only positive news for the Hokies today as one Hokie was recognized for her big game against Auburn. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/810942361069043712 https://twitter.com/BermanRoanoke/status/810939973033754624 Chanette Hicks has been named the ACC Player of the Week after having 18 points, a VT record-tying 13 assists, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals in the Hokies' win over Auburn with 11 of her points coming in overtime. Hicks has developed into one of the ACC's best players this season averaging 16.9 points, 5.3 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.7 steals so far this season as she has been a force not only on the offensive end, but has been one of the best defensive point guards in America. This is a well-deserved honor for Hicks as she already looks like someone who is bound to receive some All-ACC honors at the end of the season if she can continue to play at this high of a level in ACC play.
