Within the week, the ACC fined Virginia Tech and Louisville $25,000 each for their involvement in the scandal with Louisville also suspending co-offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway from their bowl game. Today, we found out the former Virginia Tech assistant that received information from Elrod. https://twitter.com/DavidTeelatDP/status/812041343828692992 https://twitter.com/DavidTeelatDP/status/812041630140301313 Former Virginia Tech RBs coach Shane Beamer released a statement today, apologizing for his involvement in receiving information from Tommy Elrod while also stating that he "did not share this information with anyone" and that this information was not used at all in the game. Georgia AD Greg McGarity also announced that $25,000 of Shane Beamer's salary will be withheld as punishment for his involvement in this scandal. The fact that Shane Beamer is the coach named is definitely a surprise especially that this was done while on his father Frank Beamer's staff with Shane specifically showing regret for doing this while coaching for his father. From Georgia Football's press release
“I am particularly remorseful to the extent my actions may have brought embarrassment to my family, and especially my Dad. Again, I apologize for my actions and have learned from my mistakes.”
While this is disappointing news to here, it is good for Beamer and Georgia to publicly release a statement like this while it also brings closure to Virginia Tech's involvement in this scandal at an opportune time one week before the Hokies' bowl game. At this point, it also looks like the $25,000 fine will be the extent of punishment for Shane Beamer though it remains to be seen if any suspension comes Beamer's way from Georgia or the SEC.
