Our countdown of the top 10 Hokies continues on at number 5 with one of the Hokies’ biggest breakout players of the year. This man will return to Virginia Tech as one of the top linebackers in America for 2017 and you can definitely see him playing at an All-American level next season.

That man is Tremaine Edmunds.

Tremaine Edmunds showed a lot of promise when he had a couple tackles for loss in his second career start last season in the Independence Bowl against Tulsa while seeming prime to be someone that could have a huge breakout season in his first full year as a starter and that is exactly what he did.

Tremaine Edmunds was insanely good on his way to earning All-ACC Second Team honors as he had 106 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 9 QB hurries, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, and 3 pass breakups. Edmunds was all over the field throughout the season and will be one of Virginia Tech’s star players entering next season while also being one of the top returning linebackers in America and seeming to be a lock to make next year’s Preseason All-ACC Team.

Edmunds was a playmaker throughout the season especially as a run defender where he seemed to make the right decision most of the time and was rewarded as he tied for the team lead in tackles for loss. Edmunds was also consistently productive with at least 1.5 tackles for loss in 7 of the Hokies’ 14 games along with having at least 7 tackles

Edmunds also proved that he can do it all as a linebacker as someone who can be a dangerous pass rusher and can also be useful in pass coverage whether it as a spy, in zone, or in man in some cases. Edmunds was also the best blitzing linebacker the Hokies had as shown by his 9 QB hurries and 4.5 sacks which were team highs among non-defensive linemen.

Edmunds had a big season and is going to enter next season on the radar of plenty of NFL scouts in part because of his tremendous blend of size and athleticism at 6’5” and almost 240 pounds right now. Edmunds definitely has the talent to be a first round pick and will return as a player that no longer flies under the radar but as one of the top linebackers in the ACC and America.

Tremaine Edmunds is the Hokies’ best linebacker in years and an emerging star that people all across the nation should get to know now before the 2017 season.
