Last year, the Hokies lost some of these games that they were expected to win but this year, Virginia Tech has gotten off to a much better start against weaker opposition and that continued today. Virginia Tech won their home opener over Marshall 7-0 in what was an all-around dominant performance for Pat Mason and the Hokies. Virginia Tech has been taking care of business in these games that they failed to take care of last year especially during their 17-game losing streak. The star of the game has to be VT starter Connor Coward who was absolutely dominant in 6 innings of work as Coward had 5 strikeouts and only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk. Meanwhile, Paul Hall Jr., Graham Seitz, and Kit Scheetz came in each for an inning of work and struck out 8 while only giving 2 hits in what was a great performance not only for Coward but also the VT bullpen. Coward's performance in particular may allow him to make a case for earning a spot as a weekend starter if one or two of VT's current weekend rotation struggle while Kit Scheetz seems to be locked into the bullpen this year as Scheetz already has made a couple of appearances out of the bullpen. Offensively, the Hokies were once again solid with Sam Fragale leading the way with a 1-for-3 day that included a RBI double and a sacrifice fly that brought in a run. Nick Anderson had a solid day going 2-for-3 from the plate with a RBI while Jack Owens and Ryan Tufts each had a RBI as well. Joe Freiday and Raheim Cooper both had solid days going 2-for-4 at the plate as Cooper seems to be earning the starting center field job with another start and solid performance at the plate. Virginia Tech's defense only had one error from Matt Dauby today as VT has been much better defensively in the past 2 games with only 1 error after having 5 this past Saturday. Virginia Tech has done what they were supposed to sweeping USC Upstate and beating Marshall today but they face a tougher challenge in this weekend with a long road trip out to Reno to face Nevada for four games coming up this weekend.
