Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards for the Hokies as they dropped their final regular season game 89-84 to Wake Forest. The game was a story of the Hokies building a large lead, and Wake Forest making a run to make it a close game again. There were multiple points in the game where Virginia Tech held a double-digit lead, only to see it get erased by Wake. The Hokies had a chance to take a one-point lead with 90 seconds remaining, but Robinson clanged his three-pointer off the back rim. The rebound led to two points for the Deacons, and they never looked back. Wake Forest entered this game needing a win to move closer to off the bubble. They were riding high off an upset win over Louisville, and with this win, they move from off the bubble to the “Last 4 In” according to the updated bracketology by Joe Lunardi. For Virginia Tech, their attention turns to the ACC Tournament. They’ll be the 7 seed, and will most likely play Wake Forest again in the 2nd round. If able to win that 2nd round game, they will play Florida State in the quarterfinals. It’s a sour end to what is otherwise a very successful season for Buzz Williams. It’s the Hokies 2nd straight 10-8 season in the ACC. They have quality wins over UVA, Duke, Miami, and Michigan. They’ll be in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years. It isn’t fun losing on Senior Night, but LeDay said it best in the postgame ceremonies. “We’re going to do work in the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.” Stat leaders: Points: LeDay with 24 Assists: Robinson with 6 Rebounds: LeDay with 10 Other Notes:
  • Zach LeDay scored his 1,000th point during the game. He’s the 2nd player to reach that mark this season after Bibbs did against Boston College.
  • All 5 starters were in double digits. The only other player to score was Ahmed Hill who just contributed two points.
  • Hokies were 8-26 from three. It was bound to happen, but the Hokies needs to avoid staying cold if they want to advance in the postseason.
