The Virginia Tech Hokies have played plenty of big games on Labor Day weekend but not on Saturdays which includes the Hokies facing Boise State at FedEx Field on Labor Day 2010, hosting Georgia Tech on Labor Day in 2012, hosting Ohio State on Labor Day in 2015, and facing West Virginia this year at FedEx Field on Labor Day Eve. In 2018, Virginia Tech will open the season not on Saturday on Labor Day weekend for the fifth time in the past nine seasons. https://twitter.com/Warchant/status/852136246109503489 https://twitter.com/DavidTeelatDP/status/852173194308067328 https://twitter.com/DavidTeelatDP/status/852175608117428225 https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/852521944687751168 The Virginia Tech Hokies will open the season on the road at Florida State on Labor Day night with their previously scheduled season opener against William & Mary being moved back a week as first reported by Warchant.com and the Daily Press's David Teel yesterday, and confirmed today by the ACC and Virginia Tech. This will be the first time that Virginia Tech has opened the season with a road game since 2005 when the Hokies travelled to Raleigh to take on N.C. State on Labor Day Eve. The Hokies also announced today that their home game against Notre Dame ill be moved up one week from October 13th to October 6th. With the Hokies opening with a conference game, it appears that Virginia Tech is looking to only play one conference game before completing their non-conference schedule with it being likely that the Hokies' non-conference games with ECU and Old Dominion likely coming in between the William & Mary and Notre Dame games.
