After missing out on MJ Walker and a couple of transfer targets, the Hokies have appeared to shift their attention fully onto recruiting for the Class of 2018 as they look to add 2-3 more recruits in addition to the current commitment they have from three-star guard Jaren McAllister. One of VT's targets is four-star guard Montez Mathis from Essex, MD who released his top 8 yesterday. https://twitter.com/MontezMathis/status/874422144901447681 Virginia Tech made the top 8 for Montez Mathis along with Kansas, Connecticut, Xavier, Texas A&M, Missouri, Western Kentucky, and Rutgers. With college basketball having a fall signing window, it seems likely that Mathis will make a decision sometime between now and then, and sign with the school of his choice during that period. Mathis is well-regarded as he is ranked as the 70th best recruit by 247 Sports, 103rd best by the 247 Sports Composite, and 101st best by Rivals. Mathis is also ranked as the 24th best SG by ESPN, 22nd best by the 247 Sports Composite, and 11th best by 247 Sports with all three having him among the top 5 in Maryland including 247 Sports ranking him as the third best recruit in Maryland. Mathis is a top target for the Hokies and someone who VT will undoubtedly continue to make a hard push for. Mathis is a very talented player and you can expect that the Hokies will look to get him on campus soon. UCONN and Rutgers both have received visits from Mathis recently and appear to be serious contenders, especially the Huskies with their great tradition and how it seems like Mathis is high on their board as well. Two teams that could be sleepers to watch are Western Kentucky and Missouri who both have very talented recruiters as their head coaches in Rick Stansbury and Cuonzo Martin. Kansas is also always a team to watch given their status as one of the blue bloods of college basketball that can definitely recruit nationally. Virginia Tech is in the hunt for one of their top targets, Montez Mathis, and will keep up their big push to try to add him to their 2018 class.
