Last year, the Boston Red Sox selected Aaron McGarity in the 34th round of the MLB Draft after a season in which McGarity only pitched in 10 games due to injury but had a 2.38 ERA. However, McGarity decided to return to Virginia Tech for the 2017 season with the hopes of staying healthy and having a strong season that would boost his draft stock. This year, McGarity stayed healthy, had a solid season, and has been rewarded by being selected significantly higher by the arch rival of the Red Sox. https://twitter.com/VT_Baseball/status/875035076882571269 Aaron McGarity was selected by the New York Yankees in the 15th round (452nd overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft. McGarity will likely receive an offer with a bonus around $100k, something that will likely make him seriously consider leaving VT especially with the risk that he would be taking if he returned to school and potentially losing some of his leverage in negotiations. McGarity had a decent season that was better than his 2-6 record in 23 games (1 start) suggests with 5 saves, 46 strikeouts, and an opposing batting average in .245 in 38 innings. His strikeout rate of 10.89 strikeouts per nine, innings is quite impressive as McGarity definitely has the potential to be a major league reliever in the future. McGarity will now have a big decision to make as to whether he can significantly improve his draft stock enough to help him receive a larger bonus in a draft in which he would have less leverage. At this point, it seems likely that McGarity will leave for professional baseball but if he does return, he'll definitely help Virginia,Tech's pitching rotation a lot next year. Congrats to Aaron McGarity on being selected in the 2017 MLB Draft.
