Virginia Tech Among Trio Standing Out For Three-Star CB Jermaine Waller

Virginia Tech only offered one 2018 recruit at their satellite camps this year in three-star CB Jermaine Waller, who was at VT's Washington DC camp. Waller released a top 7 this week which included Virginia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, NC State, Rutgers, Temple, and UCONN. However, a trio of those schools are standing out even more for the three-star cornerback. Waller told us that Virginia Tech, NC State, and Maryland are currently standing out for the three-star Maryland cornerback. Waller also told us that he will be visiting NC State on July 20th and Virginia Tech on July 22nd while planning to make a decision by the end of this month. Waller also told us why VT, Maryland, and NC State are the three schools standing out for him. Virginia Tech: "It's DBU. When I went to VT's camp, I liked how CBs coach Brian Mitchell coached and the drills he ran. I also talk to him a lot. Bud Foster is a great defensive coordinator." Maryland: "Maryland is my home school. I have a good relationship with their coaches and I like what they're trying to do." NC State: "I've never seen the campus, but CBs coach George Barlow is a good guy, and says I can come in and play early." With Waller being set on making a decision by the end of the month, it's hard to see him ending up at somewhere other than these three schools especially with him visiting Raleigh and Blacksburg in a couple of weeks with Maryland being the local school for him. Waller is a solid cornerback prospect with Rivals ranking him as the 59th best cornerback, 247 Sports ranking him 81st, and the 247 Sports Composite ranking him 77th. Waller is also well-ranked in Maryland with Rivals having him 16th among Maryland recruits, 247 Sports having him 19th, and the 247 Sports Composite having him 18th. Virginia Tech is in an interesting spot as they already have four true defensive back commits plus two athletes with Nadir Thompson expected to be a DB and Armani Chatman also likely to be a DB (though WR is definitely possible). VT also is in great shape with four-star CB Kalon Gervin, but that hasn't stopped VT from pursuing Waller with the Hokies definitely being a contender here. While VT may currently be the slight favorite, Maryland definitely is a serious threat given their status as the in-state school that has had a good amount of success in recruiting DMV players under DJ Durkin. NC State also has done well at building a relationship with Waller though his visit to Raleigh on the 20th will be critical to the Wolfpack's hopes of getting him. Rutgers and Virginia seem very unlikely at this point, but also can't be ruled out yet with Waller telling us that the coaches he has the best relationships with are UVA defensive coordinator Nick Howell and Rutgers CBs coach Henry Baker. With relationships being a big part of recruiting, this definitely can be a reason for some optimism for both schools though Waller also told us that his relationship with VT's coaching staff is "getting there" after just recently being offered by the Hokies, while he also appears to have good relationships with coaches at NC State and Maryland. At this point, the Hokies may be the slight favorites for three-star CB Jermaine Waller, but it's very much a toss-up still between the Hokies, NC State, and Maryland with his visits to Raleigh and Blacksburg being certain to have a significant impact on his decision.
