Joey Slye Makes the Lou Groza Award Watch List

IMG 7170 2
Watch list season has arrived with two more watch lists coming out today from the two most prominent special teams awards, the Lou Groza Award and the Ray Guy Award. Unsurprisingly, the Hokies had a nominee for the Lou Groza Award. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/885138993603543040 Senior kicker Joey Slye was one of 30 kickers named to the 2017 Lou Groza Award watch list. Slye is one of 3 kickers named to this watch list who have been semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award at least twice previously. Slye had a solid junior season making 20 of 27 field goals and 58 of 59 extra points. Slye struggled from beyond 40 making only 1 of 7 a year after making 13 of 19 from longer than 40 but Slye had always shown that he has the leg power to hit those long field goals. If Slye can improve his accuracy on the long-range kicks, he will be one of the best kickers in America though he may not get many chances from long-range after last year's VT offense led to him kicking 17 more extra points and 12 less field goals from 40+ yards from 2015 to 2016. The three-year starter was also nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works team yesterday, an even more well-deserved honor for the senior kicker who has done an incredible job raising money for cancer research in honor of his brother. Congrats to Joey Slye on these well-deserved honors for what he's done on and off the field.
