Virginia Tech Makes the Top 5 for Three-Star DT Jalen Alexander

Virginia Tech is looking to bring in a large group of defensive tackles in their 2018 class with two already committed in three-star recruits Cam Goode and Joe Kane. VT also is pursuing a pair of other talented DTs in Alim McNeill and Jalen Alexander who is seen as someone who could have the versatility to also play on the offensive line. Today, the Hokies made the cut for Alexander. https://twitter.com/GrindHard85/status/885196584216145924 Virginia Tech made the top 5 for 757 DT Jalen Alexander along with Georgia, Maryland, NC State, and Georgia Tech. West Virginia, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Temple, and UCF all previously made Alexander's top 10 but have missed out on his cut down to a top 5. Opinions vary significantly on Alexander as Rivals has him as a well-rated three-star, the 31st best DT, and the 11th best Virginia recruit while 247 Sports has him as a two-star ranked 124th among DTs and 28th among VA recruits with the 247 Sports Composite rating him as a three-star and ranking him as the 103rd best DT and 29th best Virginia recruit. While those views vary significantly currently, Alexander seems closer to his Rivals rating than his 247 rating in terms of his talent. Virginia Tech is the favorite for Alexander at this point though Alexander has been fairly quiet. However, VT definitely is boosted by being the in-state school that has made the 757 a top priority under Justin Fuente and seems to be getting a lot of interest from the Western Branch HS DT. Zohn Burden is leading the charge for Alexander and the third-year assistant has had plenty of success for the Hokies in the 757 since arriving from ODU. Georgia and Maryland both also are serious contenders here as both have had recent success in the 757. Georgia's success is limited but they were able to gain a commitment from three-star DE Jaevon Becton and bring plenty of prestige with them. Maryland has also had lots of success in the 757 since DJ Durkin has taken over with the Terps signing the Gaddy brothers and Tahj Capehart last cycle and having Tyler DeSue committed this cycle. Georgia Tech and NC State definitely can't be ruled out, but are definitely underdogs on paper at this point. Jalen Alexander also announced that he will make his commitment on August 5th as it's likely that Alexander will look to take a few more visits before making a decision. For now, the Hokies are in good position for Alexander but have a lot of work ahead to seal the deal.
