DJ Reid is No Longer With the Virginia Tech Football Team

DJ Reid always had the size to be a power back at 6'1'' and almost 240 pounds but struggled to climb the depth chart. Justin Fuente was hoping for Reid to have a big spring that would push him up the depth chart, but Reid never was able to jump into the top group of backs. Now, Reid will either head elsewhere or end his football career. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/902198485772111872 Virginia Tech announced that DJ Reid has left the VT football team but will remain on scholarship through the spring. Justin Fuente mentioned that Reid is dealing with some off-the-field issues that make football a significantly smaller priority. The departure of Reid isn't a major surprise as Reid has never been able to climb the depth chart. In addition, Reid is behind a few younger running backs on the depth chart including Deshawn McClease and Jalen Holston. If Reid does decide to continue playing football, a transfer to the FCS level where he wouldn't have to sit out would be his most likely move. Richmond could be a program to keep an eye on Reid as he's a Chester, VA native and may be looking to play closer to home. Reid may have some Group of 5 opportunities as well if he completes his degree this spring. For the Hokies, Reid's departure will open up a scholarship for the Hokies in the Class of 2018. With numbers being extremely tight, this scholarship could prove valuable with a 2018 class that could push the 25-man limit. We wish DJ Reid the best of luck in his future endeavors.
