Cam Phillips, Tremaine Edmunds are the Hokies of the Game Against Delaware

Cam Phillips Sean Savoy 1
Virginia Tech came out sleepwalking today, but were able to comfortably take care of business 27-0 over Delaware. Despite the Hokies not coming out with the most energy, there were some very strong performances worthy of our Hokies of the Game honors.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Cam Phillips

This wasn't an easy choice, but Cam Phillips earned this honor even with his fumble. Phillips had 6 receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown as the senior wide receiver was quietly productive. Phillips ran lots of good routes and gave Josh Jackson some great opportunities to push the ball down field. With his strong performance today, Phillips is only 7 receptions away from passing Jarrett Boykin for second on the Hokies' all-time receiving list, and 33 away from passing Isaiah Ford for the record. Phillips seems poised to gain take a couple of Ford's record as he is now within 700 receiving yards of the Hokies' career receiving yards record. Phillips continued his strong start and outside of his fumble, he dominated like a Preseason All-ACC WR should against a FCS opponent. Sean Savoy had another strong game with 4 catches for 63 yards, though he dropped what could have been a long touchdown. Despite that, Savoy has played well in his first two games and looks like the Hokies' second best receiver. Greg Stroman and Oscar Bradburn may not have any offensive role, but both did well on special teams today with Stroman having a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown while Bradburn consistently flipped the field on punts averaging 45.6 yards per punt and pinning Delaware inside the 20 twice.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Tremaine Edmunds

After a slow start to the season, Tremaine Edmunds came out and made a statement today with a dominant performance. Edmunds was constantly making plays for the Hokies and had 14 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Edmunds was all over the field today and looked like the star linebacker that earned Preseason All-ACC honors. While this did come against Delaware, this was the type of performance that Edmunds can bring in any game. Edmunds played aggressive while consistently making the smart decisions that helped the Hokies hold Delaware to 2.3 yards per carry. Edmunds played like the star linebacker that he is and was the best player on the field by far. While there were a few great performances today, Edmunds was far and away the best player on this day. Reggie Floyd brought lots of energy and was extremely productive today. Floyd had 10 tackles but all those tackles seemed to come right around the line of scrimmage or in the right moments when the Hokies needed Floyd to make a play. Terrell Edmunds also had a solid game with 8 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 1 interception though he did get beat a couple of times in man coverage. Congrats to Cam Phillips and Tremaine Edmunds on being named our Hokies of the Game.
