Joey Slye Breaks Virginia Tech’s Career Field Goals Record

On September 16, 2017, Joey Slye made his 69th career field goal in the first half of a game against the East Carolina Pirates. With that kick, Slye became Virginia Tech’s all-time leader in career field goals made. The record, previously held by Shayne Graham, had been standing since 1999. Slye is a favorite among Hokies, and fans will surely be ecstatic that he was able to break this record. Slye has gained much notoriety for his seemingly automatic touchbacks on kickoffs and his ability to lay down big hits on returners, and this record will add to that legacy. With it being early in Slye’s senior season, he has the potential to add to his record and go down as perhaps the best kicker in school history, with the only competition being Shayne Graham. Graham was known best for his kick against West Virginia at the last second to keep the Hokies’ perfect season alive in 1999. Hopefully Joey can have a career-defining moment like that one before he is finished. Last-second kicks and broken records aside, what truly defines Joey Slye’s legacy at Virginia Tech is his nonprofit campaign, Joey Kicks Cancer. The campaign is in honor of Slye’s older brother, A.J., who lost his life to leukemia in 2014. Slye’s campaign has raised thousands for cancer research since its inception. Joey is a selfless individual with a lot left to prove, and we look forward to seeing where his career goes from here.
