Cam Phillips, Mook Reynolds are our Hokies of the Game Against East Carolina

After a slow first quarter, Virginia Tech's defense woke up and the offense fired on all cylinders as the Hokies beat East Carolina 64-17. The win moved the Hokies to 3-0 with #2 Clemson looming in two weeks at home. Virginia Tech had plenty of great individual performances on their way to victory. However, two players stood out from the rest as our Hokies of the Game.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Cam Phillips

Cam Phillips had the best game of his career with a school record 14 receptions plus 189 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Phillips' performance was unlike any we've seen in his career and ECU had no answer for him. Phillips was able to create space against defenders trying to tightly guard him and take advantage of defenders who gave him some room to work with. Cam Phillips has been extremely impressive so far this season. Phillips's strong start has put him on pace to break most of Virginia Tech's single-season and career receiving records. With his impressive performance, Phillips now leads the nation in receiving yards with 417, tied for second in the nation with 5 receiving touchdowns, and tied for third nationally with 27 receptions. Phillips is one of the best receivers in America and is going to be a nightmare for any opponent. Josh Jackson had the best game of his career yesterday completing 24 of 31 passes for 372 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jackson had great command of the offense, made smart decisions, and was extremely accurate. The Hokies' ground game was extremely good led by Travon McMillian who had 11 carries for 72 yards along with a 70-yard touchdown reception in what was one of the best games of his career.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Mook Reynolds

After a poor first quarter, Virginia Tech's defense kicked it in gear and took over, absolutely dominating ECU's offense. Mook Reynolds stood out from the rest as though he wasn't perfect in coverage, he made plays all over the field. Reynolds had 10 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss. The North Carolina native was a defensive playmaker who had a great knack for the ball in yesterday's game and was a big reason why ECU struggled to run the football. Reynolds has become a dynamic weapon on defense as someone who is competent in coverage, but has the aggression of a linebacker. Reynolds has transformed the whip linebacker position into a modern blend of a nickelback and linebacker that has made Reynolds quite a dangerous, defensive playmaker. Greg Stroman had a miscommunication in coverage early, but played well overall with an interception, a pass breakup, and a tackle. Divine Deablo made some nice plays in coverage and continues to prove that he is a very good backup safety. Andrew Motuapuaka had a strong game with 6 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks while Tremaine Edmunds had 6 tackles and a forced fumble. Trevon Hill led the defensive line with 2 tackles for loss and a sack in what was a very good game for the 757 native. Congrats to Cam Phillips and Mook Reynolds on being our Hokies of the Game.
